Akita Puppies are lots of fun

The image of a large dog coming at you can be frightening, especially if you are not a “dog” person. If the dog is an Akita puppy, you don’t have a lot to fear.

Akitas are warm, friendly and fun dogs to be around. Properly trained as puppies, Akitas are big dogs looking for love and attention. They can be great around children. The AKC (American Kennel Club) classed the dogs as a working breed. They have also been used as guard dogs, but Akitas scare by their size, more than they do by snarling or snapping in the guard dog role. They are fiercely loyal animals. As a result of this territorial nature and their sheer size, guard dog duty frequently becomes part of their duties.

Akita puppies are large. They grow to being even larger dogs with the male Akita reaching 120 pounds on average while the female will grow to 100 pounds. The dogs stand from 24 to 28 inches tall from the floor to the top of their shoulder. For such large animals, Akitas eat a surprisingly smaller amount than other dogs in their class, like Huskies. Akitas are meat eaters and love fresh cooked meat as much as humans. Beware the one size fits all dog foods, as these can cause grown and Akita puppies health problems.

The Akita breed began in Japan and is credited with being brought into America by Helen Keller in 1937. There are two distinct breeds of Akita in the world today. The American Akita, and the Japanese Akita, also named “shiba inu”. Keller was impressed with stories of the dogs’ legendary faithfulness during a visit to the Akita district of Japan. An Akita pup, named “Kamikaze-Go” was only 75 days old when presented to Keller during a speaking visit in Japan, as a token of that government’s appreciation of her visit.
